MARILYN MANSON

Eat Me Drink Me

(Interscope/Universal)

031

UPON first listen, Marilyn Manson's latest album Eat Me Drink Me did not really excite me (unlike his previous efforts such as Mechanical Animals or Antichrist Superstar). He is, after all, whining about his love life and the music seems slow and lacklustre. Not your typical Manson.

But after listening to it repeatedly, the guitar riffs and Manson's scary vocals slowly got to me. Manson has since revealed that he sang most of the album lying down on the studio floor with his hands cupping the studio microphone, resulting in a distinctive sound.

Songs such as Evidence, If I was Your Vampire and They Said Hell's Not Hot are my pick of the best songs on the album. The lyrics are certainly far from standard Manson; a sample: "I kill myself in small amounts, and each relationship is not about love, just another funeral and just another girl left in tears" from They Said Hell's Not Hot. This is something you might get from a boyband. There is one song that really irks me, and that is a badly remixed version of his first single Heart-Shaped Glasses. This song would be suited in a dance hits from Ibiza compilation. Besides that, I have no complaints, although I suspect hardcore Manson fans would not agree with me.
