ASHLEY PARKER ANGEL

Soundtrack to Your Life

(Universal)

017

THE name may not be familiar but you can bet your bottom dollar that you have seen Ashley Parker Angel before. He was one-fifth of the boyband O-Town, and by the look of things, the only one to have achieved a measure of success since the band parted ways in 2003.

With his solo debut, Angel has opted to follow the rock path, in some ways picking up from where O-Town left off with its second and final album 02 which featured a change in style from pop to rock.

Boyband-haters are probably itching to dismiss Angel as a talentless guy even before giving the CD a listen. But if you do decide to give him a chance, I hope you'll be as pleasantly surprised as I was. I listened to the album on the way to an assignment and the first couple of tracks, the hard-rocking Let U Go and punk-rockish I'm Better, got me cranking up the volume and made the long drive much more interesting.

I cringed when the third track, Soundtrack to Your Life, came on and showed hints of his boyband days (something that was echoed on Crazy Beautiful and Beautiful Lie) but thankfully, he redeemed himself with the snappy Feel So Alive.

That is not to say that Angel has gained total credibility with Soundtrack to Your Life. There is still some way to go, though thankfully he's headed in the right direction.
