RESPECT the metal! No one can destroy the
metal. The metal will strike you down with a
vicious blow."
That message, however, is only significant if
you either didn't get it the first time around or
believe that Michael Learns To Rock actually, well,
rocks!
"The Best Band in the World" a.k.a. Tenacious D
is back. However, this time, Kyle Gass and Jack
Black have the benefit of a bigger budget, book
deal, the services of rock heavyweights Meat Loaf
and Ronnie James Dio (Dave Grohl's contributions
don't count 'cause he's long been considered an
unofficial D member) and a feature film from
New Line Cinema.
Still, the big question is ... "Are the D still the
Best Band in the World?"
Well, considering that this record doesn't con- tain songs on par with Tribute and
Wonderboy or
Kielbasa, Double Team and the Lynyrd Skynyrdesque The Road for that matter, the answer is a
resounding "no"! Worse still, the jokes seem to
have worn a little thin.
Inward Singing and One Note Song were hilarious skits from The D's debut LP, but the same
can't be said of The Divide. Nevertheless, there are
the side-splitting little mock-operas Kickapoo and
Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown) as well as Master
Exploder and The Metal (updated versions of Explosivo and Rock Your Socks respectively) to fall
back on.
The Pick of Destiny may not showcase Black and Gass at their
absolute best, but if you believe that line about Bad D being better than
The Beatles, this may just be worth the dough. Or not. |
