IF you are The Beatles and have
over 100 great songs to choose
from, there is no way anyone
should expect you to come up with
a perfect single CD compilation.
Even if you are Simon & Garfunkel
and have a relatively small catalogue, there is still such an abundance of powerful material that
some outstanding songs will have
to be left off. But if you are Daft
Punk, there is simply no excuse for
leaving your best songs like Digital
Love and Aerodynamic off a career-encompassing collection.
Now the strengths of Daft Punk
are still here, those synthy distorted vocals, mean bass and funky
rhythms within a pop/dance/electronica context. Around the World,
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and
One More Time all fly the flag for
this formula with aplomb, while
fresh colors are borne by the
electronic soundscape Rollin' &
Scratchin' (Kraftwerk, anyone?),
the blistering hard rock of Robot
Rock and the lounge pop jazz of
Something About You (we're talking Style Council territory here).
The swathe of light and sound
that slowly encroached upon the
consciousness of a generation of
nightclub revelers is indeed alive
and well!
Obviously Daft Punk has its limitations but there are actually very
few dance outfits I enjoy more
than this duo who certainly chart-
ed new territory in combining
music with animation. If only they
could rectify the unnecessary
omissions (and for Lawd's sakes
they found room for three Daft
Punk remixes of other artistes'
material!), I would deem this as
essential a purchase as Moloko's
recently released compile
Catalogue. Surely it's not too late,
boys?
